Overview

doTERRA International LLC is a privately held company headquartered at 389 South 1300 West, Pleasant Grove, Utah, founded in April 2008 by a group of health-care and business professionals, including David Stirling. The company sells essential oils and essential-oil-based wellness, personal-care, and supplement products, marketed under its own internal purity standard, which it calls CPTG Certified Pure Tested Grade. The company operates on a direct-selling (multi-level marketing) model: independent distributors, called Wellness Advocates, purchase products at wholesale and can earn commissions on retail sales and on sales generated within their downline, under a unilevel-style compensation structure. In 2020, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission ordered doTERRA to stop misrepresenting the potential financial rewards of the business opportunity to prospective distributors. doTERRA states its Pleasant Grove corporate campus, at over 610,000 square feet, houses roughly 3,000 corporate employees supporting global operations. Since its founding, doTERRA has expanded from an initial line of roughly 25 single oils and 10 blends to a broad international footprint, with sales and distributor markets across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and other regions, and has continued to add new country markets in recent years.
