LegalShield
LegalShield (operated by parent company PPLSI) is a Ada, Oklahoma-based provider of subscription legal service plans and identity-theft protection products, sold in the U.S. and Canada primarily through an independent-associate, multi-level-marketing sales channel.
Overview
LegalShield traces its roots to 1972, when Harland Stonecipher founded the Sportsman's Motor Club in Ada, Oklahoma, later incorporated in 1976 as Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. The company went public on NASDAQ in 1984, moved to the American Stock Exchange in 1986, and later traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker PPD until 2011, when private equity firm MidOcean Partners acquired it for roughly 650 million US dollars and rebranded it as LegalShield. Stone Point Capital acquired a majority stake in 2018; the company (now operating under parent PPLSI) remains privately held. The company's core offering is a membership-based legal services plan: subscribers pay a set monthly fee for access to a network of independent provider law firms for common legal matters, along with a companion identity-monitoring product sold under the IDShield brand. Distribution runs through independent sales associates operating under a multi-level marketing structure, a model the company has used since the early 1980s. LegalShield/PPLSI states it serves millions of individual members and business clients across the United States and Canada, supported by a network of thousands of contracted provider attorneys. It briefly extended into the United Kingdom between roughly 2019 and 2021 before that market exit.
