What Happens If You Need To Return Products Or Cancel Your Distributor Agreement

Most people sign up for a direct selling business expecting to sell products, not to figure out how to get out of a contract. But plans change. Inventory sits in a closet unsold. A side business turns out to be more work than it looked online. When that happens, what you are owed, and what you have to do to actually get it, depends on rules that are spelled out in writing long before you ever place your first order.

This guide covers what a reasonable return and buyback policy looks like, what federal rules require, and the actual steps to cancel a distributor agreement without losing more money than you have to.

Why buyback and return rules matter before you sign

Here is the uncomfortable truth about direct selling inventory: once you buy it, getting your money back is not automatic. It depends entirely on the terms you agreed to when you joined, which most people skim past on their way to the "I agree" button.

A fair policy lets you return unopened, resalable product within a reasonable window, usually 12 months, for a refund close to what you paid, minus a modest handling fee. A policy worth questioning makes buybacks nearly impossible: short windows of 30 days or less, vague language about what counts as "resalable," or refund amounts so low they barely cover the shipping you would spend sending it back.

This is why the buyback policy deserves real attention before you place a large first order, not after. If a recruiter pressures you to buy more inventory than you can realistically sell by promising "you can always return it," ask to see that return policy in writing before you agree to anything. A verbal promise from an upline is not a contract term, and it will not help you when the company's actual paperwork says something different.

What the FTC requires direct sellers to offer

Federal rules set a floor here, even if individual company policies go further.

The FTC's Cooling Off Rule gives consumers the right to cancel certain purchases made away from a seller's regular place of business, generally within three business days, and get a full refund. This covers a lot of in home and one on one direct selling sales, though the exact scope depends on where and how the transaction happened.

Separately, the FTC's Business Opportunity Rule requires certain business opportunity sellers, which can include some direct selling operations, to give prospective distributors a disclosure document before they pay anything, along with specific information about earnings and litigation history. This rule is about disclosure before you sign, not a buyback guarantee after the fact, but it exists for the same reason buyback rules do: so people make the decision to join with real information, not a sales pitch.

On top of federal law, the Direct Selling Association's Code of Ethics commits member companies to buy back unsold, marketable inventory from departing distributors at a minimum of 90 percent of the original net cost, within twelve months of purchase. Membership in the DSA is voluntary, and not every direct selling company belongs, so this standard is not law. But it is a useful benchmark. If a company's actual written policy falls well short of it, that gap is worth asking about directly before you commit any money.

How to find the cancellation clause in your agreement

Every distributor agreement has a section covering cancellation and returns, even if it is buried near the bottom under a heading like "Termination" or "Policies and Procedures." Pull up your actual signed agreement, not a summary a recruiter gave you, and look for answers to these specific questions.

How much notice do you need to give, and does it have to be in writing. Many companies require a written cancellation request, sometimes through a specific form on their back office portal, and will not treat a phone call or a text to your upline as official.

What is the return window for unsold inventory, measured from the purchase date, not your cancellation date. If you bought product eight months ago and the window is twelve months from purchase, you may have less time left than you think.

What percentage of the original price do you get back, and are there deductions for shipping, restocking, or a processing fee. Compare this to the 90 percent DSA benchmark as a rough sanity check.

What happens to any autoship or recurring order you have set up. Some agreements require you to cancel autoship separately from canceling your distributor status entirely, and missing that step can mean charges keep hitting your card after you think you are done.

Whether commissions already earned but not yet paid are forfeited upon cancellation. This detail surprises a lot of people who cancel mid cycle expecting a final check.

Steps to request a refund or inventory buyback

Once you know what your agreement actually says, the process itself is usually straightforward if you follow it exactly.

Start by gathering your records: the original purchase receipts or invoices for the inventory you want returned, your distributor ID or account number, and a copy of the signed agreement showing the terms you are relying on.

Submit your cancellation and buyback request in writing, through whatever channel the agreement specifies, whether that is a form in the back office, an email to a specific department, or a mailed letter. Keep a copy of whatever you send and note the date.

Ask for written confirmation that your request was received, and ask for a timeline for when the refund or buyback payment will be processed. A reasonable company will give you a specific number of days, not a vague "soon."

Ship returned product only after you have that confirmation, using a trackable shipping method, and keep the tracking number until the refund actually clears.

Follow up in writing if you do not hear back within the stated timeline, referencing your original request and its date.

What to do if a company refuses to honor its policy

Most reputable direct selling companies process buybacks without drama, because it is standard practice and good for their reputation. If a company drags its feet, lowballs the refund well below what its own written policy promises, or stops responding altogether, you have a few real options.

Put everything in writing, including a clear, dated summary of what you requested and what the company's own policy says it owes you. This record matters if the dispute escalates.

File a complaint with the FTC and your state attorney general's consumer protection office. These agencies track patterns across multiple complaints, and a company that is quietly stiffing distributors on buybacks tends to show up more than once in their records.

If the company is a DSA member, consider raising the issue through the association, since member companies have committed to the buyback standard described above.

For larger disputed amounts, a letter from a consumer protection attorney, or a small claims court filing, often gets a faster response than another email to customer support.

It is worth saying plainly: a well run company does not need this kind of pressure to honor its own written policy. If a company routinely makes its own distributors chase down money it promised in writing, that reflects on how it is run more broadly, not just its refund desk.

Interestingly, this is often where the difference between a well run company and a struggling one is most visible. Companies that have invested in modern back office systems tend to process buyback and cancellation requests quickly and transparently, because the request, the original purchase record, and the payout all live in one system that can confirm the numbers instantly. Companies still running on older, disconnected software are more likely to lose requests in email inboxes or take weeks to confirm something that should take a day. That is not a guarantee of anything about a company's prospects, but it is a reasonable signal of how seriously it takes its obligations to the people selling its products.

Common questions

Can I get a full refund if I quit a direct selling company? Usually not a full refund of everything you spent, but most companies and many state laws require them to buy back unsold, resalable inventory at close to what you paid for it, often around 90 percent, within a set window after you cancel.

What happens to my unsold inventory if I just stop paying or stop logging in? Nothing good. Most agreements say you remain an active distributor, and sometimes still liable for autoship charges, until you formally cancel in writing. Walking away quietly does not end the contract on its own.

Does the three day cooling off rule apply to every direct selling purchase? It generally applies to sales made away from the seller's regular place of business, which covers most in home and one on one direct selling transactions, but the details depend on where and how the sale happened, so read the specific terms you were given at signing.

If you are dealing with a company that is slow, unclear, or unresponsive about a buyback you are owed, that experience tells you something real about how the business is run behind the scenes. Companies built on modern, transparent back office technology, the kind Plondo provides to direct selling companies, tend to handle these requests cleanly because the data is already connected. You can learn more about how that works here if you want to understand what a well run back office should look like from the operator's side.
