Direct selling in Atlanta, Georgia

Metro Atlanta had 64,157 more employed people in August 2026 than a year earlier. The city of Atlanta has 520,070 residents in the Census Vintage 2024 estimates, inside a metro area of 6.41 million. This page covers the local job market, the largest employers, two big campuses, home languages and where the city stands in Plondo's directory.

Jobs grew faster than the labor force

The Georgia Department of Labor counted 3,359,913 people in the Atlanta metro labor force in August 2026. That was 58,814 more than a year earlier. Over the same 12 months, the number of employed people rose by 64,157 to 3,247,114.

The count of unemployed people moved two ways. It rose by 5,261 in the month, to 112,799. Over the full year it fell by 5,343.

For anyone building a sales team here, the numbers point one way. Most people in the metro labor force have a job. A new recruit in Atlanta is far more likely to be a working person adding a side activity than someone looking for work.

Delta first, Northside second

The Metro Atlanta Chamber's 2025 survey of top employers puts Delta Air Lines at the head of the list, with 42,090 full-time equivalent employees. Its industry line reads scheduled air transportation. Northside Hospital is second, with 32,000, listed under general medical and surgical hospitals.

Further down, The Home Depot ranks sixth with 19,576 and Emory University ranks eighth with 13,500. The list mixes an airline, a hospital, a building supply retailer and a university.

An airline and a hospital at the top of the list mean many local workers keep hours outside a standard office day. A rep or a host in Atlanta may plan around a flight roster, a hospital rotation or a weekend shift in a store aisle.

Emory's 16,511 and Georgia State's 8,102

Emory University reports 16,511 total students enrolled. It is also on the chamber's employer list, with 13,500 full-time equivalent staff. Georgia State University reported 8,102 students in its graduate programs for the fall 2025 semester.

The Georgia State figure covers graduate students only, so the university's full enrollment is larger. Together, the two counts show a large campus population in the city. A company that recruits near these campuses reaches people whose calendars follow semesters.

Most of the metro lives outside the city line

The city of Atlanta had 520,070 residents in the Census Vintage 2024 estimates. The Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell metro area had 6.41 million people in 2024, according to USAFacts, which draws on Census estimates.

So the city holds only a small part of the region. The labor force and employer figures on this page are metro figures. The population, birthplace and language figures are for the city alone. Reading them together means keeping that line in mind.

Mostly English at home

Census QuickFacts for 2020 to 2024 shows that 9.0% of Atlanta city residents were born outside the United States. Among residents age 5 and over, 12.2% speak a language other than English at home.

Most Atlanta households use English at home, so a company selling in the city can start with English materials. The 12.2% share is still a real group of neighbors. A team that serves them will want product pages and customer help in other languages.

Back office needs around airline and hospital rosters
