Direct selling in Lexington, Kentucky

Lexington's largest student body and its region's largest employer are the same institution, the University of Kentucky. The city had 329,437 residents in the Census Vintage 2024 estimates. This page covers the university, state government jobs in the Bluegrass Region, the metro labor market in early 2026, and what Plondo's directory shows for Lexington.

One university, two records

The University of Kentucky enrolled 38,719 students in Fall 2025. LEX 18 reported the count as a record. The year before, enrollment was 35,951.

The same institution is the largest employer in the Bluegrass Region. Commerce Lexington's 2025 Business Prospectus lists the university with 26,486 employees. The listing classes those jobs as education and places them in Fayette County.

For anyone building a direct selling team here, those two counts describe two different groups. Students follow a semester calendar. University staff work through the whole year. Both groups meet on the same campus, in a city of 329,437 people.

11,210 state workers on the regional list

Commerce Lexington's list of Bluegrass Region major employers does not stop at Fayette County. It includes Kentucky State Government, with 11,210 employees in Franklin County.

That puts two public employers on a list meant to describe the Lexington economy to businesses. One is a state university. The other is the state government itself.

The prospectus does not break these jobs down by role or schedule. It does show that the region's largest employer is a public institution, and that state government ranks among the major employers next to it.

Metro jobs, September 2025 to February 2026

The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted a civilian labor force of 277.6 thousand in the Lexington-Fayette metro area in February 2026. The figure is preliminary. In September 2025 the count was 281.6 thousand. In January 2026 it was 277.1 thousand.

Of the February labor force, 267.4 thousand people were employed and 10.2 thousand were unemployed. Both figures are preliminary. The unemployment rate was 3.7 percent.

The rate moved over the winter. The BLS table shows a preliminary 2.9 percent for December 2025, then 3.5 percent in January 2026, then 3.7 percent in February. The October 2025 column has no figure.

These are metro numbers. They reach beyond the city limits and should not be read as counts of Lexington residents alone.
