Direct selling in Mississippi

Mississippi has 2,954,160 residents in the Census Vintage 2025 estimates. Small firms make up 99.4 percent of its businesses. This page covers small business, public university enrollment, the state pyramid scheme law and what Plondo's directory shows for Mississippi. Each number comes from a public source listed at the end.

444,113 people on small business payrolls

The SBA Office of Advocacy counted 294,768 small businesses in Mississippi in its 2025 profile. That is 99.4 percent of all businesses in the state. Those firms employed 444,113 people, or 47.0 percent of Mississippi's employees.

Direct selling fits that pattern. Each independent rep runs a business of one. In Mississippi that rep works in a state where small firms already hold 47.0 percent of jobs. Customers and recruits here are used to buying from small operators.

The same SBA profile identified 1,932 Mississippi firms that exported goods. That count covers firms shipping goods out, not direct selling. It does show a group of Mississippi businesses already selling well past the state line.

A 12 month, 90% buyback test

Mississippi pyramid promotional scheme law[1]

A person may not establish, promote, or operate a pyramid promotional scheme. A plan is not treated as a pyramid scheme if it does not cause inventory loading and it has a bona fide inventory repurchase program. The repurchase program must be clearly described in recruiting literature, sales manuals, or contracts. This is general information and not legal advice.

CitationMiss. Code Ann. §§ 75-24-71 to 75-24-77 (Title 75, Chapter 24); prohibition at § 75-24-73
Direct selling ruleThere is no separate registration or exemption for multilevel companies. A multilevel plan is lawful only if it avoids inventory loading and has a bona fide inventory repurchase program. The statute defines that program as repurchase of current, marketable inventory within 12 months at not less than 90% of original net cost.

What § 75-24-73 asks of a plan

Mississippi does not register multilevel companies. It applies a test instead. Under § 75-24-73, no one may establish, promote or operate a pyramid promotional scheme.

The test has two parts. A plan must not cause inventory loading. It must also have a bona fide inventory repurchase program. That program has to be described clearly in recruiting literature, sales manuals or contracts.

The statute supplies the numbers. Current, marketable inventory must be bought back within 12 months at not less than 90% of original net cost. The Mississippi Attorney General enforces the law through its consumer protection work.

The law puts the proof on paper. In Mississippi, the buyback terms belong in the documents a company hands out when it recruits.

Oxford's flagship and an 81,961 student system

Mississippi's public universities enrolled 81,961 students in fall 2025, according to the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning. The system reported that total as growth over fall 2024.

The University of Mississippi reported a fall 2026 enrollment of 28,960. That single campus is a large share of the people a company would reach by recruiting at Mississippi schools.

Students appear in direct selling as customers and as part time reps. A company recruiting on these campuses would be promoting a plan in Mississippi. The state's repurchase test would apply to that plan.

No Mississippi head office listed, November 2026

Plondo's directory lists no direct selling company headquartered in Mississippi as of November 2026. Reps in the state sell for companies based elsewhere.

Those companies still promote their plans in Mississippi. The statute bars any person from promoting a pyramid promotional scheme. A company based in another state that recruits Mississippi reps has to meet the buyback test here.

Systems built around the buyback rule

A first Mississippi head office needs a commission engine that tracks inventory each rep buys, so returns within 12 months at 90% can be processed and charged back. The back office should show the repurchase policy in plain words. Replicated sites should print it at sign up. AI employees should answer buyback questions for reps, including students at the state's public universities.
