Direct Selling in New Mexico

New Mexico has 2,125,498 residents in the Census Vintage 2025 estimates, and 99.0 percent of its businesses are small. This page covers the state's small business counts, its jobless rate in 2025 and 2026, and undergraduate enrollment at two state universities. It also covers the state law on pyramid promotional schemes and links to city pages.

172,113 small firms and 340,706 people on their payrolls

The SBA Office of Advocacy counts 172,113 small businesses in New Mexico. Those firms employ 340,706 people. Small businesses make up 99.0 percent of all businesses in the state.

They also employ 53.3 percent of New Mexico employees. So a little more than half of the people who work for an employer here work for a small one. A direct seller in New Mexico joins a business world where independent owners are the norm.

For a recruiter, these counts describe the people they will meet. Many prospects already own a small operation or work beside an owner every day. They know what it takes to track sales, buy inventory and keep customers coming back.

6,441 openings in a year that ended with fewer locations

Between March 2023 and March 2024, 6,441 New Mexico establishments opened, according to the SBA profile. More establishments closed than opened over the same span. The state ended the period with fewer locations than it started with.

The churn still created work. Opening and expanding establishments added 79,820 jobs in that year. New locations appear often in New Mexico, and they also disappear often.

That turnover shapes who a team leader meets here. Some people have just started a venture. Others have just seen one close. Both groups are weighing what to do next, and a company recruiting in New Mexico should treat that choice with care.

A jobless rate that moved from 4.2 percent to 4.7%

New Mexico's annual unemployment rate was 4.2 percent in 2025, according to the Department of Workforce Solutions. That was just below the national rate for the year.

By August 2026 the state's rate was 4.7%. In July 2026, New Mexico tied with Delaware for the 10th highest unemployment rate among the states.

The August 2026 figure is higher than the 2025 annual figure. Companies that recruit in New Mexico this year will meet people who are looking for work. Direct selling is not a replacement for a paycheck, and no company should promise results to someone between jobs.

18,466 undergraduates at UNM, 13,039 at NMSU

The University of New Mexico reported a total undergraduate enrollment of 18,466 in fall 2025. New Mexico State University reported 13,039 undergraduates the same term.

UNM is in Albuquerque. NMSU is in Las Cruces. Each campus brings a large group of young adults into its city every fall, and each group turns over as students graduate and new ones arrive.

For a direct selling company, these two student bodies are a known, countable audience. A company with students on its team needs clear rules, simple tools and support that fits around class schedules.

New Mexico sellers, out of state head offices

Plondo's directory lists no direct selling company headquartered in New Mexico as of October 2026. Reps who sell here work for companies based in other states.

That shapes daily work. Training, events and support usually come from somewhere else, often by phone or video. A company based outside the state should make sure its back office and its policies account for New Mexico reps, including the state's law on pyramid promotional schemes.

It also leaves an opening. A company that set up its head office here would be the first New Mexico listing in Plondo's directory.

Chapter 57, Article 13 and the attorney general

Pyramid Promotional Schemes Act[1]

The Act is the New Mexico law on pyramid and multilevel sales schemes. It defines terms such as compensation and pyramid promotional scheme (Section 57-13-2). It gives the attorney general enforcement powers, including accepting written assurances of discontinuance in place of bringing an action (Section 57-13-5). This is general information and not legal advice.
