Direct Selling in Pennsylvania
Most businesses in Pennsylvania are small, and the state is home to 13,059,432 people according to Census Vintage 2025 estimates. This page covers the state's small business base, its labor force, its largest corporate employers around Philadelphia and its public universities. It also covers the consumer protection law that applies to direct selling here. Links to city pages follow.
Where 99.6 percent of firms are small
The SBA Office of Advocacy counts 1.2 million small businesses in Pennsylvania in its 2025 profile. Those firms make up 99.6 percent of all businesses in the state. They employ 2.5 million people. That is 45.2 percent of the state's employees.
An independent seller is also a small business owner. A Pennsylvanian who signs up with a direct selling company joins a very large group of residents who already run something small. That group is the field a new seller here competes in for customers and attention.
A record labor force in June 2026
The Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry reported a civilian labor force of 6,643,000 in June 2026. The department called it a record high. The labor force counts residents who are working or looking for work.
The unemployment rate that month was 4.1 percent. It was down one-tenth of a percentage point over the month. The department's table put employed residents at 6,371, a figure counted in thousands.
Those numbers describe a state where most people who want work have it. People who take up direct selling here are likely to fit it around a job they already hold.
Nine Fortune 500 names around Philadelphia
The Philadelphia Inquirer counted nine Philadelphia-area companies on the 2026 Fortune 500. Comcast and Burlington were among them. The highest ranked was Cencora, the Conshohocken-based pharmaceutical company, at No. 10.
None of these is a direct selling company. Together with the SBA count, they show two sides of the Philadelphia area economy: a short list of very large employers and a long list of small firms. A direct selling company that recruits in the region shares a labor market with both.
Ten state universities, enrollment up again
Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education runs 10 universities. Fall 2025 enrollment across the system stood at 83,005, according to the Inquirer.
That was the system's first enrollment increase since 2010. In 2010 the system had 119,513 students. Enrollment had been falling, sometimes sharply, in the years between.

No Pennsylvania head office in the directory yet
Plondo's directory lists no direct selling companies headquartered in Pennsylvania as of October 2026. That does not mean no company sells here. It means none of the companies in the directory gives a Pennsylvania head office.
In practice, a Pennsylvania seller or team leader in the directory's view works with a company based in another state. Sales made in Pennsylvania still take place in the state's trade or commerce, which is the scope of the 1968 law described above.
