Direct Selling in Illinois
Illinois is home to 32 Fortune 500 headquarters on the 2024 list and to 1.4 million small businesses. The state has 12,719,141 residents in the Census Vintage 2025 estimates. This page covers the state's business base, its University of Illinois campuses, its job market by metro area, and the two direct selling companies Plondo's directory lists here.
Big headquarters, mostly small firms
Axios Chicago reports that 32 companies headquartered in Illinois made the 2024 Fortune 500 list. That count puts Illinois among the top five states for Fortune 500 headquarters. Walgreens is on the list. Ace is a newcomer to it.
Illinois is also a small business state. The SBA Office of Advocacy counts 1.4 million small businesses here. They make up 99.6 percent of all Illinois businesses. They employ 2.4 million people, which is 43.7 percent of Illinois employees.
The two numbers point in different directions. Almost every business in Illinois is small. Yet small firms employ less than half of the state's workers. The rest work for larger employers, including the big headquarters companies. A direct selling team in Illinois will meet both kinds of people: employees of large companies and owners of very small ones.
New firms keep opening. Between March 2023 and March 2024, 35,143 Illinois establishments opened. The SBA also identified 21,929 Illinois firms that exported goods in 2023. Many Illinois businesses already sell beyond the state line.

Kitchen tools in Addison, real estate in Berwyn
Plondo's directory lists two direct selling companies with headquarters in Illinois. The Pampered Chef is based in Addison and sells kitchen tools, cookware and food products. Realty of America is based in Berwyn and runs a residential real estate brokerage and agent network. One sells products for the home. The other helps people buy and sell homes. The list below updates as the directory grows.
Three campuses of very different size
The University of Illinois system has campuses in Chicago, Urbana-Champaign and Springfield. Each reports its own enrollment, and the gap between them is wide.
The University of Illinois Chicago welcomed more than 37,000 students for the 2026 fall semester. The university says that is the highest enrollment in its history for the second straight year. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign tallied 9,207 freshmen in fall 2025. The University of Illinois Springfield enrolled 312 first-year students in fall 2025, an increase over the year before.
For a company based in Illinois, these campuses are sources of interns and staff for office roles such as customer service, design and data work. The Chicago campus alone is larger than many towns. A Springfield office draws from a much smaller first-year class.
December 2025: jobs up in some metros, down in more
The Illinois Department of Employment Security reported that over the year to December 2025, total nonfarm jobs decreased in 7 metropolitan areas and increased in 5. The state's job picture did not move in one direction.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 219,000 job openings in Illinois in December 2025. Employers were still hiring across the state.
For a direct seller, the metro split matters more than the state total. A team that spans several Illinois metros may find local conditions differ from one area to the next. That is one reason the city pages below exist.
Go from the state to an Illinois city
State totals hide local differences, as the December 2025 metro job numbers show. Each city page covers one place, with its own verified facts and any directory companies based there. Chicago, Urbana-Champaign and Springfield, the three University of Illinois campus cities, are good places to start where a page exists.
